What’s the Difference – Facebook and Twitter?

You won’t believe how often I am asked this question: What is the difference between Facebook and Twitter?

Many people who ask this question usually add something slightly derogatory like” both of them are just for chatting and gossip and looking at pictures of old boyfriends and girlfriends or your cousin’s new baby”. Well yes! That too. It depends on what people want to use their chosen social media platform for. I guess it is like a telephone – some people just chat for hours and others do billion dollar business deals.

Social Media or Social Network

OK, people use the terms “social media” and “social network” almost interchangeably., but they’ are not really the same thing, In a way, Social networking is a branch of social media, and this can  be further broken down into two distinct branches — the social network and the information network.

And here we get to the difference between Facebook and Twitter.

There is no doubt that Facebook is primarily a social network, although the Facebook Pages are very effective as a tool for business. But on Facebook you are supposed to connect with close friends and share content.
